Diabetes is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time. As of 2024, over 589 million adults worldwide live with diabetes — a figure projected to reach 853 million by 2050. The disease caused 3.4 million deaths in 2024, accounting for 9.3% of all global deaths, and placed a staggering USD 1.015 trillion burden on healthcare systems.
Even more concerning, 1 in 3 adults with diabetes remains undiagnosed, and 1 in 6 pregnancies is affected by high blood sugar. These statistics highlight the urgent need for global action, education, and innovation in diabetes care.

In Latin America, approximately 4 in 10 adults are affected by cardiometabolic syndrome — a growing public health concern driven by rising rates of obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and poor nutrition. Hypertension affects over 35% of the adult population, while overweight and obesity are present in more than two-thirds of adults.
The burden of diabetes alone resulted in over 224,000 deaths in 2024, and healthcare spending related to diabetes reached nearly USD 81 billion, accounting for 8% of global diabetes-related expenses. Projections suggest that without effective interventions, the region will continue facing rising health costs, premature mortality, and deepening inequality.

In Colombia, more than 3 million adults are living with diabetes — a national prevalence of 8.3%. While progress has been made in diagnosis and awareness, approximately 16.2% of cases remain undiagnosed.
The economic impact is substantial: the average annual healthcare cost per person with diabetes is over USD 1,900, with national spending estimated at nearly USD 5.7 billion. In 2024, the country recorded over 15,000 diabetes-related deaths. These figures emphasize the importance of education, early detection, and equitable access to quality care across the country.
